Spotted Jellyfish
The spotted jellyfish can be found in warm waters south of Kanto. In Kagoshima, you can find them from summer to fall. They have 8 oral arms and look like an octopus, hence its name in Japanese, “Takokurage” (Papuan jelly). Phytoplanktons called zooxanthellae live in their body. The spotted jellyfish survives using nutrients created by these phytoplanktons through photosynthesis. The brown color you see is the color of these phytoplanktons that live inside their transparent body.
The white dots are cartilaginous tissues, which are not seen in ephyra or young jellyfish. They start to appear as they grow up.
