This shiny silver fish swimming in the tank like a bullet is in the same family as skipjack tuna and tuna.
Skipjack tuna lives in temperate/tropic regions around the world and can grow up to be 1 m in length.
It is an important asset for the fishing industry. It is the main ingredient for bonito flakes in Kagoshima. Makurazaki port is famous for being the main landing harbor for skipjack tuna. Some of the bonito flakes are made in the same port. On the list of “Kagoshima’s seasonal fish”, selected by Kagoshima Prefecture, it is listed as fish of spring.
Here at Kagoshima City Aquarium, we capture small skipjack tuna, about 25 cm in size, in August for display.
