Pacific Bluefin Tuna
Pacific bluefin tuna lives in temperate/tropical waters around the world. It can grow up to be 3 m in length and weigh up to 400 kg. It is the largest tuna that can be captured in the Japanese coast.
During its infant years, it has distinctive horizontal stripes on its body and is called Yokowa. Once fully grown, it is called Honmaguro.
At Kagoshima City Aquarium, we collect small tunas, 25 cm in length, around August for display. These tunas are born in oceans around Okinawa and Taiwan in May to June then come up to coasts near Kagoshima.
