Loggerhead turtles are found all over the world in temperate/subtropical regions. It can grow up to weigh 180kg, and its shell can grow to be 90cm in length. It is highly carnivorous and eats crabs and shellfish, crushing their shells.
In Japan, loggerhead turtles return to shore to spawn from May to July. Yakushima is known as the largest spawning spot for loggerhead turtles in Japan. In recent years, spawning activities have been spotted on the shorelines of KinkoBay as well.
In Kagoshima, various organizations conduct research around Yakushima in order to protect the turtles.
