Japanese purple sea urchins have dark purple spikes. They are found in mid-Honshu, Kyushu, China, and Taiwan. Its shell can grow up to be 5 cm in diameter.

They can be found on the rocks during low tide. They can also be found in shallow rocky areas in numerous coasts of Japan. They are often eaten.

These sea urchins are often displayed in the Dolphin Waterway outside of the aquarium as well. To display them in the Touch Pool, our staff dives into the ocean and captures them.
